–Warner, (Defy Me) |
Juliette Ferrars and Aaron Warner's relationship.
History[]
At first Juliette Ferrars hates Aaron Warner and thinks he’s a monster. She believes that he has brought her to Sector 45 to force her to be a weapon for The Reestablishment. Warner has no idea how to form a relationship with someone, and his actions often fail to elicit the response he wants. Sometimes he is very antagonizing towards Juliette, while other times he is caring and more open with her. Juliette continues to feel hatred, anger, and frustration towards Warner, while also finding herself attracted to and concerned about him. Juliette weaponizes Warner’s feelings for her to distract him during her escape with Adam Kent and Kenji Kishimoto. She kisses him, which allows her to grab Warner’s gun, shoot him in the shoulder, and then flee.
Relationship[]
Juliette is very much conflicted about her feelings for both Adam and Warner. She is also worried about what people might think of her if she were to be with Warner. For some time, Juliette feels disgusted with herself for wanting to be with Warner because he has done so many horrible things.[1] As they spend more time together, particularly away from Sector 45, Juliette begins to better understand Warner and feels empathy for him. She admits he can be cold and ruthless, but also asserts that he is a normal human, despite his many denials.
Juliette learns that Warner can touch her because he has the power of absorbing the abilities of others. When she learns to control her own abilities, she is able to confirm that she loves Warner for more than just the fact that he can touch her. Juliette eventually realizes her feelings for Warner are deeper than her feelings for Adam. She ends her relationship with Adam.
In Restore Me, Juliette tells Warner that she loves him. A shocked Warner replies that he loves her too. They begin to share the same quarters and frequently make time to be intimate. When Juliette discovers that Warner has been lying to her and keeping secrets about their past, she breaks up with him. Warner is broken and shattered by their break up. He is desperate to fix things between them.
In Defy Me, both Juliette and Warner learn their entire history and what has been done to them. Warner tells Juliette that he is willing to do anything for her and he loves her. In Imagine Me, Warner and Juliette get back together. Juliette begins to trust Warner more and more until she decides she does in fact love him. When she reclaims her adopted name of Juliette, Warner is the only one who gets to call her by her birth name, Ella. Juliette is also the only one who calls Warner by his first name. After they defeat The Reestablishment, Warner proposes to Juliette, and she accepts. They get married in Believe Me.
Past[]
Warner and Juliette grew up together until Juliette was taken by The Reestablishment. Their memories of each other have been repeatedly erased. Warner's father, Paris Anderson, would keep putting them together, only to erase their memories every time because they found themselves drawn together, like magnets. Anderson never told either of them about their shared history. It didn’t matter how many times he reset the story or remade the introduction; Aaron always fell in love with Juliette. Delalieu Warner said that they always found a way to fall for each other. It was obvious, every time they were in the same room, they were like magnets. At first, Anderson thought that it was a fluke, but when it kept happening despite the memory erasure, he became furious. He blamed Juliette for making Warner weak in his eyes.
Analysis[]
Even in her other memories, Juliette feels safe when she looks at Warner. Warner tells Juliette that they aren't that different from each other, and she later admits he's right. They were both raised by abusive parents, suffered from a friendless childhood, and have a lot of pent-up rage towards the world. The difference between them is that Juliette chose to repress her rage while Warner embraced his. In Fracture Me, Adam describes Juliette as “obsessed” with Warner. “She has some weird fascination with his twisted life.”[2] Warner is the only emotional through line in Juliette's life that has ever made sense. He's the only constant, steady, and reliable person she's ever had.
In his wiped memories, Warner feels like he's seen Juliette before and she feels familiar to him. Warner is attracted to Juliette partly because of her powers and partly because he recognizes that they’re not that different. Juliette is the only person who’s ever looked Warner directly in the eye. She speaks to him with no filter and is unafraid to show anger and real, raw feelings in his presence. He likes that she challenges him. He describes her as a “soft, deadly creature. Kind and timid and terrifying.” Even when she hates him, Warner can’t help but be fascinated and enchanted by her. He is desperate to be “a part of her world. To know what it’s like to be in her mind and to feel what she feels.”[3] Kenji says that Warner looks alive when Juliette is in his arms, and human like he’s never seen Warner before. Warner wants to see Juliette bloom into her power. He has the utmost confidence in her.
