Asylum

The Asylum is a psychiatric institution where Juliette Ferrars has been locked up for the past 264 days. It is run by The Reestablishment.

Description

The asylum is supposedly a “center for troubles youth, for neglected children from broken families, a safe house for the psychologically disturbed.” It is not far from the mountains and near the water, but everything is near the water now. People are transported to the asylum in a white van and are handcuffed to their seats. Nights are punctured by screams and heaving sobs, wails and tortured cries, the sounds of flesh and bone breaking by force or choice.

Inmates are not told how the system works when they arrive. They are just thrown into their cell, usually by themselves. There is no system to the food the asylum provides for the patients. There is usually something in the morning, but there are no guarantees for anything else unless they get lucky. The food is some unknown substance. It smells like chemicals and is an “amorphous lump.” It's either too sweet or salty, but always disgusting. You must wait at least three minutes to before touching the tray or you get burned. Patients are also let out to take showers.

Juliette's Cell

Juliette's cell is 144 square feet with four walls and one window with a small pane of glass. There are fourteen cracks in the walls, which are shades of gray. Juliette’s rolls her notebook and shoves it into the wall to keep it safe. The floor and ceiling are the same slab of stone. There is a small slot in the door for food. Her skimpy mattress is just cloth-covered springs. The bed frame is built from old water pipes. She also has a meager pillow and a threadbare blanket. They add a spare bed frame, pillow, mattress, and blanket for Adam Kent when he is added to her cell.

Hallways

There is no color or light in the hallways, there are pitch black. The door to the cells open when it's time for a shower. The inmates never see each other.

Showers

The bathroom has a row of showers. There is no lighting in the bathroom. There is usually soap on the floor. There’s usually three people at a time. They have two minutes to shower. The spigots barely function. There are no towels. Juliette can bath in 90 seconds.
